PTC 8

Criteria:
Demonstrate in practice their knowledge and understanding of how students learn

Key Indicators:
  • enable students to make connections between their prior experiences and learning and their current learning activities
  • provide opportunities and support for students to engage with, practise and apply new learning to different contexts
  • encourage students to take responsibility for their own learning and behaviour
  • assist students to think critically about information and ideas and to reflect on their learning

What this means at Halcombe School:
  • Provide learning opportunities that are varied and challenging
  • Develop a supportive classroom where students are active participants in the learning process
  • Student goals are current including in the Key Competencies
  • Provide opportunities for students to reflect on learning, set success criteria and set new goals
  • Establish clear boundaries and expectations for behaviour
  • Establish clear, appropriate class routines that are understood and used consistently
  • Model positive interactions with students, parents and colleagues
  • Gather prior knowledge and use this as a basis for future teaching

Week 4, 2016
Students have completed a number of reflection activities and set goals to improve their Key Competencies (goals were edited/adjusted by me to ensure they are appropriate, measurable and achievable).  These goals will be shared with parents and reflected on throughout the term.

23 February 2016
Today the Mayor of the Manawatu District Council visited our class.  She talked about how we can be awesome members of our community and about what it means to be a leader.

1 June 2016

I often use online tools to gather student voice about all sorts of things relating to their school life.  Here, I asked students to share their thoughts about Pirate Day!

Term 3 2016
Students are constantly being asked to reflect on their learning.  In Room 6, we often do this through individual blog posts.

28 March 2017
Today the students had to give an opinion based on something that is happening in the book they are reading as part of their Literature Group.  They were encouraged to think critically and deeply, and provided a justification for their ideas.  Here is an example from the Red group, who were reading 'Tomorrow When The War Began':

Term 3, 2017
We continually reflect on our learning in our class.  For example, at the beginning of every new unit of PE, we reflect on where we're at, and write goals.  We evaluate our progress at the end of the unit.  At the end of our inquiry, students completed a thorough evaluation of their independent inquiry work.

7 July 2017
Today I gathered some student voice.  I asked the students to write down their hopes/dreams/goals/wishes for the second part of the year.  Did they want to do anything differently?  What did they want to achieve?  It was a very useful exercise.
